Search for Missing Kayaker Suspended

Updated: September 8, 2009
The search for a missing kayaker in the waters off Charles Island has been suspended. After an intense multi-agency search, crews were unable to locate the kayaker that went missing after a kayak that he and another person were riding in early Sunday morning capsized.

On Sunday at 0442 hrs., the Milford Fire Department Emergency Operations Center received a 911 cell phone call for a person in the water. This individual had been out in Long Island Sound with another person when their kayak flipped over putting them into the water. The individuals were unable to upright the kayak and began to swim toward anchored boats.

One individual made it to an anchored vessel in the area of Charles Island. The Milford Fire Department boat, Marine 1, transported this person to the Milford Yacht Club where Fire Department Paramedics transported the person to Milford Hospital.

Crews immediately began searching the waters for the second kayaker. The search included crews from the Milford Fire & Police departments, US Coast Guard surface ships & helicopters, and multiple surrounding agencies. Crews continued the search well into Monday, with Milford Fire Department and CT State Police Dive Teams utilizing side-scan sonar in an attempt to locate the missing person.
